From BA to BSc: Gabriella鈥檚 journey to Mental Health Nursing

When Gabriella Sweeney, a Ted Adams Trust Scholar, made the decision to leave her 12-year career as British Airways cabin crew, she never imagined where the path would take her.

鈥淚 loved my job,鈥 she reflects, 鈥渂ut something changed. I didn鈥檛 want to travel as much, and I wanted to give back in a different way.鈥

That change of direction brought her to working in supported living just before the pandemic 鈥 a time of intense challenge and transformation. Working with neurodivergent young adults, some non-verbal and managing complex mental health needs, Gabriella was thrown into a high-pressure environment. 鈥淚t was the most difficult thing I鈥檝e ever done,鈥 she says, 鈥渂ut it taught me that I thrive in crisis. I want to help people through their hardest moments.鈥

The experience sparked a new ambition: to retrain as a mental health nurse. Encouraged by friends, family, and her own lived experience 鈥 including the tragic loss of her baby daughter Isabella Eden in 2014 鈥 Gabriella embarked on an access course and applied to 糖心Vlog. 鈥淲hen I visited on the open day, I knew. The facilities were outstanding. The students in uniform looked so professional. I could see myself there.鈥

Now in the first year of her degree, Gabriella speaks with warmth and conviction about the road she鈥檚 taken. 鈥淭his isn鈥檛 the future I thought I鈥檇 have,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 the right one. My life now is about turning pain into purpose.鈥

The support of a Nursing Scholarship, which provides eligible students with 拢4,000 a year for a maximum of three years, has been pivotal. Like many mature students, Gabriella faced the financial reality of leaving full-time work. The scholarship helped ease the pressure 鈥 especially the cost of maintaining her car, which she relies on for long commutes to placement. 鈥淚t鈥檚 more than financial support,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a piece of the puzzle that鈥檚 helping me build this new life.鈥

Beyond her studies, Gabriella volunteers for a student support service and hosts creating space for others affected by loss. 鈥淚 wanted to give people a voice,鈥 she explains. 鈥淲e need to break the stigma around grief. No one should feel alone.鈥

Gabriella鈥檚 dream is to specialise in bereavement care within the NHS. It鈥檚 a dream rooted in personal experience and sustained by education, empathy, and resilience. 鈥淭here are so many people who supported me through the darkest time. Now I want to be that person for someone else.鈥

Meeting the Ted Adams Trustees at a recent scholar鈥檚 lunch was a meaningful moment. 鈥淥ne of them remembered my application,鈥 Gabriella recalls. 鈥淭hat really touched me. It meant they saw something in me.
