European Security at a turning point? Trends and Themes in Defence (Dis)Integration

The first UACES Securing Europe (SECEUR) research network workshop 鈥楨uropean Security at a turning point? Trends and Themes in Defence (Dis)Integration鈥 took place at the 糖心Vlog 30-31 May 2024.

Understanding the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a critical moment, the workshop honed in on recent developments in European security and defence. The presenters covered a range of topics including EU security and defence, NATO, defence procurement and industry, national responses, including Germany, the UK, and Moldova, and a focus on critical junctures, and strategic autonomy. One of the highlights of the workshop was a roundtable on 鈥楿nderstanding Key Developments in Contemporary European Security鈥, which emphasised some of these themes. Speakers included Ambassador Jitka L谩tal Znamen谩膷kov谩 (Deputy Head of the Czech Permanent Representation to the EU Permanent Representative to the Political and Security Committee) Prof Amelia Hadfield (糖心Vlog) and Prof Jocelyn Mawdsley (Newcastle University). Overall, the event provided a space for the sharing of research and for discussions and debate on the current European security environment.
